Eight rules for writing fiction:

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.

4. Every sentence must do one of two things -- reveal character or advance the action.

5. Start as close to the end as possible.

6. Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them -- in order that the reader may see what they are made of.

7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.

8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

I love it. ^^ It can power up your mac, fade any playlist or podcast you want in, snooze if you whack the keyboard, create recurring alarms that skip days (for those delightful midweek holidays), etc etc. Read the help file for all the juicy details.

It's truly amazing, these new forms of protest. Or old forms of protest, new (or just odd?) things.

Tens of thousands of Mexicans join a march in Mexico City to protest against the rising price of tortillas.

A Canadian town council issues new rules to immigrants telling them not to stone or burn women.

The last's from Maita Sayo. This made me laugh, so read and watch: So today I heard a story about a bunch of people who organized a gay pride march in a virtual game (pardon me, I don't know the terminology) in order to protest the homophobic and misogynist characters in online games like warcraft and second life.

So far I've read about how they're going to fix the undersea cable in Taiwan, how people steal oil from a pipeline, how to seal off a nuclear plant, and how internet censorship works, both in general and in China. Also how embryo adoption works, and how long one can stay frozen (four months, if properly done). Cool.

There's a belief in theatre (or was it weddings?) that the worse the rehearsal was, the better the performance would be. Given my completely crapola attempt at reg, I'm hoping it holds true for this sem.

Basically, I got six units through CRS. Fortunately, my course means that professors should give me a slot if I prerog (I'll graduate late if I don't get them, and most teachers are nice enough to understand I don't want to spend an additional sem taking three units). The professor I wanted for my research proposal class was out of the country, too, but she had a class the day before registration ended so I figured I could catch her there. Easy peasy, right? But NO. Wafaz na lang when one of my professors made those prerogging write a five page paper, with research, sources, the works. That didn't guarantee you made it in his class, either - only the first four who submitted a "good" paper would make it. Needless to say, kinarir ko yung papel na yan - only to go to his class yesterday and find out that he HADN'T READ THEM. He just accepted whoever still came to class. Bah. Acceptable pa rin yan - until I reached into my bag for my form 5a and realized it wasn't there. Arghhhhh. By process of elimination, we figure my classmate (who was ironically checking it for mistakes) must have put it in her bag by accident. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing her til our next class together - right before reg ends. That means.. .MANUAL ENLISTMENT! Must stalk all seven teachers before reg ends tomorrow. Hurrah ^^"

Last but not least, the teacher I was looking for was supposed to come to class today at 7 am, for a three hour lecture. She didn't show up, she's not answering her phone or her email. Ermengarde.

Despite it all, I'm still surprisingly upbeat. Maybe it's because I haven't actually started the legwork I need - no one is up and about yet. Thank God for SC and the Internet, yeah?

Post-Debate Hangover

The title of the entry should have been Post-Debate Depression, but I'm just too damn happy. NDC Baguio '06 was amazing, and not just because Claud and Nico BAGGED THE CHAMPIONSHIP. Congratulations to them and everyone who competed! To UPD especially, brilliant performance (malamang kasama ako dyan diba? haha), and to Tet for being such a consistently exceptional (yes, oxymoronic but it's true) partner. Ibang level ang talent mo... and not just in terms of debate.

It feels so strange waking up by myself. Read into that what you must, but it's so true. After sharing a room with either eight or 14 people (depending on how you count), waking up in an empty house is just wrong. Not having the constant debate bubble around me is weird, too. After all, no more...

1. CK being unbelievably perky at 6:30 AM. For the love of all that is holy.

2. Interminable lines for the bathroom (and the corollary, no more need to be careful when opening a closet. Malay mo, may half-naked debater sa loob). Even inside the bathroom you may not be safe - just ask Claire. Beware the proletariat falling from the ceiling.

3. Blonde being completely random (minsan nga random SOUNDS na lang, hindi pa words).

4. Debate-enforced diet + bingeing. Nervousness and bad food combined with, well, desperate hunger lead to bad things for my stomach.

5. Snuggling. May substitutes pa yan. Haha.

6. PMA cadets. Boys in uniform! 'Nuff said.

7. SM Baguio.

8. Jackets, coats, long sleeves. I miss them so.

9. Prepping and debating a round I know Tet and I rocked - and having the adj agree.

10. Always, always, always having a shopping/drinking/debate/comfort buddy. Insta-barkada.

11. Turning the hotel into our house - terrorizing Koreans, padding around in pajamas, bugging your neighbors, hanging out in the corridors, taking baths in the gym.

12. Being able to get anywhere, and I mean ANYWHERE, in a cab/FX for almost exactly P40. Amazing.

and last but not least -- the uniquely Debsoc slang. Ermengarde, I know right, fo-yeah, are you drugs, and.. ba-DING! It's so gay, but life is just so boring now. Insert karma deflector with matching frantic hand actions, since Eris and Yang have already paid most of the Society's dues. ;)
